MECHANICSBURG, PA – Brandon Hopkins (Marion, VA/Marion) and Steve Long (Greensburg/Hempfield) again starred for the Crimson Hawks as IUP competed in the final day at the 2013 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Men's and Women's Swimming Championships at Cumberland Valley High School.

The four-day event wrapped up with the IUP women finishing fourth with 350 points while the men finished fifth with 384 points.

West Chester defended its crowns on both sides as the men scored 811 points while the women racked up 800.

Hopkins wrapped up the PSAC championships by destroying his own record in the 1650 yard freestyle, finishing in third place with a time of 15:53.31. The time was nearly 15 seconds ahead of the school record of 16:08.11 he set at last year's conference meet. It was also an NCAA provisional time.

Long also broke his own school record, successfully defending his conference title in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 1:51.35. The time barely edged his time at last year's conference championships of 1:51.82. That time was also an NCAA provisional time.

Rudy Da Costa (Durban, KZN, South Africa/Westville Boys') had a third NCAA provisional time for the men, notching a fourth place finish in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 1:52.77.

Ally Long (Frederick, MD/Frederick) was the highest finisher on the women's side, taking second place in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:02.41. Allyson Mitidieri (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) took third in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:21.75 while Taylor Snyder (Titusville, Pa. /Titusville) finished ninth in the 100 yard freestyle, touching the wall in 52:39.

The 400 yard freestyle relay team of Snyder, Emily Shumaker (Carlisle/Big Spring), Ashley McAteer (Irwin/Penn-Trafford) and Christina Janosky (Dover, Pa. /Dover ) had a 10th place finish with a time of 3:34.53.

All of those four times were NCAA provisional marks.

The Crimson Hawks finished up the PSAC championships with three conference titles, including Long in the men's 100 and 200 fly and the women's 200 free relay team.

IUP returns to the pool in three weeks at the NCAA championships in Birmingham, Alabama. Action runs Thursday, March 6 thru Sunday, March 9.
